MKI Hosts Induction Workshop for the 2018 Academic Year intake
On the 23 March 2018, the Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) hosted induction workshop for new intake for the 2018 academic year. The event was intended to introduce learners and students to the culture of MKI and what is expected from them as the bursary holders. In the 2018 academic year, MKI has provided bursaries that will support 115 high school learners and 196 tertiary students who are pursuing STEM related studies.
Speaking at the occasion, the Acting Chief Executive (ACEO), Mr Ranveer Persad, welcomed the attendees and he briefly explained to them about the MKI background. He advised them to be curious about what they are studying by asking questions and partaking in extra-curricular activities. He then outlined the purpose of the induction: to acknowledge the bursary recipient’s and their achievements.
The CEO of the Moses Kotane Foundation, Mr Steve Mashiya, explained that the foundation is launching new projects in the North West, Pella Village. One of which is, an art centre that would teach sculpturing to skilled and unskilled youth, so they can showcase their own work.
Dr Nqaba Ngcobo, a founding member of the MKI; gave a brief synopsis of his academic journey. He advised learners to acquire knowledge and training in scarce skills, such as cryonics, cryogenic engineering and nanotechnology, because they are at the core of technological age.
Three currently funded students also spoke at the event. Lindani Dube, is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Statistics through the MKI Bursary programme. Senzekile Gwacela, an undergraduate bursar, who was recently awarded by MKI a full scholarship to study Nautical Science at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) expressed her gratitude to the institute. Mimi Ndwandwe, high school learner, looks forward to tertiary education and reaching her goals.
Durban based comedian, Siyanda Maphumulo (Gonzo), exercised the crowd’s funny bone. Graduates were awarded certificates for their meritorious achievements.
